Scituate Mariner-AROUND TOWN: July 10, 2015

Everything you need with a good dose of fun

When I learned that friends Diana and Marty Block had bought Reynolds Package store, I knew good things were in store for this Scituate treasure. Diana has a bubbly air of enthusiasm surrounding her and Marty seems to know everyone in town.
Reynolds Package has been in town for more than 40 years. The Blocks purchased it in January and are excited to continue its tradition of service to the community. While they are quick to note that they are not reinventing an already successful business, they are updating the store for the 2000s. They started with adding shelving and new coolers to accommodate more inventory. They’ve brightened up the look and feel with hand painted signage by Diana. On the day I stopped by, there were fresh hydrangeas in vases throughout the store and fun beach music was playing. Think modern day convenience store meets vintage country general store.
Marty and Diana’s plans for the future are simple: To make Reynolds a store that carries something for everyone and to be a fun destination for all of its customers. It seems like Reynolds is already there.
Marty explains how Reynolds is really “many businesses under one roof.” Starting at 5 a.m. regulars come in daily for their morning coffee. Mid-day brings local laborers and families in for hot dogs, snacks and quick pick ups of groceries without the hassle of a supermarket. Late afternoon brings folks on their way home from work for a bottle of wine or one of the many craft beers that Reynolds stocks. On one display, I noticed everything for a barbecue from mustard and ketchup to firewood to wiffleball sets.

Marty has been the owner of Michael’s Wine and Spirits in Weymouth for 27 years and brings his expertise to the business. Reynolds has a wide range of wines to satisfy every taste and budget. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask Marty and he’ll get it for you.

A steady stream of customers came in and out while I was there and I couldn’t help but notice that everyone seemed happy and friendly. It struck me as a place where everybody knows your name. Hmmm, maybe one day they’ll make a TV show about Reynolds.

Reynolds is open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. Alcohol cannot be sold until 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. Sunday.
